Who Should Join My Underwater Photography Workshop?
Taking one of my underwater photography workshops is perfect for beginners looking to learn the basics, people who have recently bought new equipment and need help with it, novice photographers that feel that they just aren’t significantly improving or have reached a plateau and advanced photographers that are wanting to learn some new techniques, tips or tricks. These fun workshops are a great way to learn and get the most out of your underwater camera gear investment instead of struggling to master underwater photography on your own. I take pride in my photography workshops and get a lot of satisfaction out of helping others learn new techniques and elevate the consistency and quality of their images. My trips are also very non-photographer friendly, so you should never feel like you have to be a photographer to join a workshop, but after attending one, be warned, you may get the bug for underwater photography.
What To Expect From My Underwater Photography Workshop?
There will be practical presentations made throughout the course of the trip to include UW photography basics, advanced and creative topics as well as post processing. Another very popular and useful aspect of the workshops are the photo group review sessions where we all submit images and I provide constructive feedback on the technical and artistic qualities of the image as well as make suggestions of things to try for better outcomes. Like anything in life, the amount of value you get from a workshop is directly proportional to the amount of effort you put in it, but all of the presentations, reviews and assistance are completely optional! Each guest is free to participate as much or as little as they want because everyone is at different skill levels, with different equipment and have different goals. Most important, it is YOUR vacation, so do what makes you happy and spend your time as you want to!

“I had the pleasure of spending 12 days in the Philippines with Ron and I still look back on that trip with a smile. Ron is one of those rare trip leaders who is able to gently guide you to the next level in your underwater photography. He accomplished this with encouragement, first class instruction in techniques and processing and valuable critique. Anyone can find fault with an image! Ron is able to help you see what you did right, and most importantly, what you can do next time to get an even better shot. I left the workshop a better photographer and now that I am a photography instructor myself, I look back on that experience as a bit of a guidebook on how to do it right!”
~ Jane Palmer
"From 1st-timers setting up new camera equipment, novice photographers to the advanced, Ron provided something for everyone. His detailed professional knowledge of underwater photography will bring you to the next level and beyond with your underwater photos. I was on one of his live-aboard workshops and you will definitely walk away more advanced then when you arrived. He’ll help you with strobes, ambient light and even create special effects. He’ll guide you with camera lenses set up as well. Ron will even help you position yourself to get the composition framing right to capture the ambient sun beams light. But the best part, he’s a great fun guy."
~ Joanne D'Ambrosio
“We had the opportunity to do a workshop with Ron in Raja Ampat. It was one of the best workshops we’ve attended. Ron takes wonderful underwater photos and is eager to share his experience and knowledge with his students. We learned a ton in daily class, image review, and from the hands-on assistance. Ron helped us hone a range of skills from how to set up great wide-angle, how to fine tune our camera settings, and even how to make edits in Lightroom. Can’t wait to do another workshop with Ron!”
~ Rosie Pongracz and Anthony Stevens
“I have attended many photo workshops and believe Ron Watkins to be my favorite trip leader and teacher. He is very friendly and easy going and always has a smile on his face making everyone feel welcome. He holds class every day and will mentor the novice photographer with the new point and shoot camera as well as the more experienced photo pro. Everyone comes away with new knowledge after attending one of Ron’s workshops as well as having an enjoyable vacation.”
~ Karen Spencer
"I lost my live-aboard virginity during a photo workshop led by Ron in the Sea of Cortez. I could never forget my first time (being a newbie UW photographer). Ron inspires me and I admire his patience and love to share his experience."
~ Martin S. Beaulieu
“Ron is the best trip leader and photography instructor! He gives everyone individual attention, both in his workshops and while diving. I learned so much on the trip I took with him to Dumaguete, Philippines. He really cared about each of us and about helping us to improve as much as possible on the trip, no matter how much experience we had or what kind of setup we were using. He is very passionate about diving, photography, and teaching, and his knowledge is extensive in all facets of underwater photography. I can't wait to go on another trip with Ron!”
~ Susanne Skyrm
"Just a quick note to thank you Ron, for a most excellent adventure into the underwater wilderness of Jardines de la Reina. The accommodations were great, the food terrific, and the people were amazing on board the Tortuga. I could not have met and dove with a better assemblage of friends from around the globe. While most of us were already veteran photographers, your photographic and editing workshops were fascinating and provided hands on insight and instruction into skills not yet considered. I think we all walked away with a new talent for one of your favorite techniques, motion blur! So thanks again to both you and Manomi for an unforgettable adventure into the Garden of the Queen."
~ Brian Burnett
"Ron is a rare combination - a great photographer who is also a great instructor. I had the pleasure of attending a workshop he led in Raja Ampat, and I definitely finished a better photographer than when I started. I've done a handful of underwater photo workshops over the last few years, and his was the best by far. I doesn't hurt that he's also a genuinely great guy. If you have an opportunity to travel with him, take it!"
